Chantrey, Sir Francis

Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature

an eminent English sculptor, was born in 1782, at Norton, in Derbyshire. He received some instruction from John Raphael Smith, and in 1802 he advertised in the Sheffield papers to take crayon portraits. Shortly. afterwards he visited Edinburgh and Dublin, and then London. In 1817 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy. He was employed upon several statues for St. Paul's, besides designs for church sepulchers. He died in 1841. See Spooner, Biog.
