In the typical language of Scripture, the love of the Redeemer to the Church is vividly alluded to in the expression "the bride, the Lamb's wife" (Revelation 21:9). Christ himself is also called "the bridegroom" in the same sense (John 3:29). The figure, under various and extended forms, is of frequent occurrence in the O.T., to denote the union between Jehovah and the Jewish nation. (See CANTICLES); (See NUPTIALS).
