an ascetic writer and convert to the Romish Church, was born at Abergavenny, in England, Dec. 9, 1575. He studied at Oxford and London, joined the Benedictines at Padua in 1605, and received holy orders at Rheims. In 1624 he was sent to Cambray as spiritual father of the newly founded monastery of English Benedictines. In 1633 he went to Douay, and in 1638 as missionary to England, where he died, Aug. 9, 1641. He was the means of bringing many to the Church of Rome. His ascetical writings were published in extracts under the title Sancta Sophia (Douay, 1657).
