Xanthippe

1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

the wife of Socrates. Her name has become proverbial in the sense of a nagging, quarrelsome woman. Attempts have been made to show that she has been maligned, notably by E. Zeller ("Zur Ehrenrettung der Xanthippe," in his Vortrage and Abhandlungen, i., 1875).
