1911 Encyclopedia Britannica

a term, corrupted from a Nootka Indian word for "gift," for a ceremonial custom among some of the Indian tribes of north-west America, consisting in the distribution by an individual of his property among his friends and neighbours, who make equivalent gifts, with interest, in return.
