1910 New Catholic Dictionary

The second degree of perfection in the spiritual life. The soul having advanced in excellence, easily avoids mortal sins, strives more earnestly towards perfection, but is still weak regarding venial sins. The characteristic feature of this state is determined by the soul anxiously hoping to advance in virtue.
