Walter Skeat
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Born 1835; died 1912. Did a great deal towards popularizing philology and modernizing old authors. Edited many important books, notably his great edition of Piers Plowman. Compiled various dictionaries of which his Etymological Dictionary is perhaps the best known and the most valuable.
