Six-Stringed Whip
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Articles of faith imposed by a statute of King Henry VIII in 1539. Also known as the Six-stringed Whip, or Bloody Statute, from the merciless persecutions to which it gave rise. The Articles, composed by Henry without any formal authority from the Church, enforced belief in Transubstantiation, communion in one kind, confession, celibacy of the clergy, vows of chastity, and private Masses.
