1910 New Catholic Dictionary
(Latin: sermo, speech)
- A formal discourse of a sacred character, as opposed to homilies (informal explanations of Scripture) and instructions (catechetical teachings).
- A response of the pontiff to a set address, or a set address of the pontiff himself.
When the pope preaches, the sermon is always called a homily.
