1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Hebrew: an adversary, enemy)

Name for the chief demon or devil (1Par 5), frequently used as a common noun in the Old Testament (3Kings 5). The form Satanas is used throughout the New Testament in the Vulgate, while the form Satan occurs in the Old Testament only. In Matthew 16 it is used in the sense of contrariness or opposition.
