1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Latin: inter, between; esse, to be)

The price or rate of premium per unit of time that is paid by a borrower for the use of what he borrows; specifically, a rate per cent of money paid for the use of money; also the money so paid. Excessive interest is a sin against justice, unlawful, and illegal.
