1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A tribe of Algonquian linguistic stock, of Wisconsin, still living on a reservation within the same territory. They are a fine race, formerly hunters, now lumbermen. The tribe has a clan system, with descent in the female line. They were enemies of the Sioux and friends of the French and English. The first mission was founded by the Jesuit explorer, Father Claude Allouez, in 1670. Two-thirds of the tribe are Catholics.
