1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Ancient diocese founded, probably 676, by partition from Lichfield, with Putta as first bishop. The shrine of the martyred Ethelbert, dating from 793, was destroyed by the Welsh in 1055. The cathedral has suffered from unskilful additions. Included among its bishops is Saint Thomas of Hereford, the last English saint canonized.
