Henri Guise

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Prince of Joinville, son of Francois Guise; born 1550; died Blois, France, 1588. He fought against the Turks, 1566, returned to France and joined in the second and third Huguenot wars, and took an active part in the massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day. When the Catholic League was formed, 1576, he became its hero, and virtual leader against the Protestants under Henry of Navarre. During the ensuing civilwar, 1585-1588, his victories over the Protestants forced King Henry III, who feared his influence, to have him assassinated.
