Grammaticus

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Reigned from 964 to 965. Born in Rome, Italy as Grammaticus; died in Hamburg, Germany. A cardinal-deacon, he was elected pope in opposition to Emperor Otto's candidate, the antipope, Leo. Otto immediately marched to Rome and carried Benedict off to Germany where he died. His remains were later translated to Rome.
