Gradual
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
(Latin: gradus, step)
The response and versicle to the Epistle, so called because at High Mass it was sung on the step of the altar. It ordinarily accentuates something in the Epistle, and is taken, except in rare cases, from Scripture, mostly from the Psalms.
