Gethsemani

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(Hebrew: gat, press; semen, oil)

Plot of ground on the Mount of Olives, beyond the ravine of the brook Cedron, where Jesus spent much time with His disciples (John 18), suffered His agony (Mark 14; Luke 22), and was taken prisoner by the Jews (Mark 14). Tradition places the tomb of the Blessed Virgin in the Valley of Gethsemani, near the Cedron.
