George von Peuerbach

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Father of observational and mathematical astronomy in the West; born near Linz, Austria, 1423; died Vienna, Austria, 1461. In development of Ptolemy's "Almagest" he initiated the transition from the duodecimal system; his Theoricae novae planetarum is an able attempt to reconcile the theories of the universe prevalent before the days of Copernicus.
