Fisherman, Ring of the

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A gold ring placed by the cardinal camerlengo on the finger of a newly-elected pope. It represents Saint Peter, fishing, with the name of the reigning pope around it. The earliest mention of it is in a letter of Pope Clement IV written in 1265 to his nephew Peter Grossi.
