Ex Voto
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Latin term for a thing offered because of a binding promise or vow, usually an ornament for the altar, sanctuary, or other part of a church, expressive of thanksgiving or petition for some favor. Votive candles are lit as an expression of faith in the intercession of the one at whose shrine or altar they are lit.
