Dias, Bartolomeo
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
(died 1500) Portuguese navigator. He first planted the cross on South African soil at Croix Island, Algoa Bay (1486), near the Cape of Good Hope which he discovered later (1488). He was lost in a shipwreck while taking part in Cabral's expedition to the Indies.
