Corcoran, James Andrew

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Theologian, editor, and Orientalist, born Charleston, South Carolina, 1820; died Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1889. Ordained in Rome, December 21, 1842, he was the first native of the Carolinas to receive priestly orders. He edited the "United States Catholic Miscellany," the "American Catholic Quarterly Review," and Bishop England's works. He was secretary to the Second Plenary Council of Baltimore, and one of the theologians of the doctrinal commission of the Vatican Council.
