Column

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

A pier of stone or similar material, slender in proportion to height, and used as a support. It consists of three parts (capital, cylindrical or polygonal shaft, and base), is named for the architectural order to which it belongs, and in Gothic is most frequently clustered. The size and position of church windows are usually determined by the space between columns.
