(703-766) Confessor, Bishop of Metz, born Hasbania, Belgium; died Metz, Lorraine. Educated at the court of Charles Martel, he became chancellor and prime minister. He introduced the Roman liturgy and chant into his diocese and established community life for his cathedral clergy, composing a special rule for them. He founded the Abbey of Gorze and Saint Peter's Abbey on the Moselle, and introduced the League of Attigny, a confraternity of prayer.
