1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Ancient diocese, England, including most of the counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland; founded with AEthelwulf (1133-1155) as first bishop. It was the only English see with an Augustinian cathedral chapter. The last Catholic bishop, Owen Oglethorpe (died 1559), was the only one who could be persuaded to crown Elizabeth.
