Baker, Francis Asbury

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

(1820-1865) Co-founder of the Paulist Institute, born Baltimore, Maryland. He became an Episcopalian minister, 1839; was converted as a result of the Oxford Movement, 1853; entered the Redemptorists; and was ordained priest, 1856. Later he severed his connection with the Redemptorists to assist in establishing the well-known Paulist Institute, which is largely indebted to him for its impressive rubrical observance and its tradition of short practical sermons; his own are models of lucidity and neatness.
