Argyll and the Isles, Scotland, Diocese of

1910 New Catholic Dictionary

Comprises Argyll and part of Inverness counties, islands of Bute and Arran, and the Hebrides; suffragan of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh. The dioceses of Argyll, founded about 1200, and the Isles, traditionally established by Saint Patrick who consecrated the first bishop, were united in 1878 under Angus Macdonald (1878-1892).
