Sponge
Holman Bible Dictionary
The skeleton of marine animals whose structure retains water. It was especially useful in bathing. The only instances of its use in the Bible center around giving Jesus a drink while upon the cross (Matthew 27:48; Mark 15:36; John 19:29 ). See Cross.
