Holman Bible Dictionary
(mawr' dih ci) Personal name meaning, “little man.” 1. Esther's cousin and the mastermind behind her rise to power and subsequent victory over the evil Haman. Haman, a descendant of the Amalekite king Agag, sought to destroy the Jewish race. Mordecai, a descendant of King Saul's family, led Esther to thwart the attempt, Haman was hanged on the gallows he had erected for Mordecai. See Esther . 2. A man who returned from Babylon to Jerusalem with Zerrubbabel (Ezra 2:2; Nehemiah 7:7 ).
