Matthias
Holman Bible Dictionary
(mat thi' uhss) Shortened form of Mattathias (“gift of Yah.”) Disciple who followed Jesus from the time of John's ministry of baptism until Jesus' ascension, who was chosen by lot and prayer to succeed Judas as an apostle and official witness to the resurrection (Acts 1:20-26 ). This selection was regarded as necessary to fulfill Scripture concerning the band of apostles (Psalm 69:25; Acts 1:20 ). Scripture mentions nothing further about Matthias. See Disciples; Acts .
