Mamre
Holman Bible Dictionary
(mam' rih) Place name meaning, “grazing land.” Main area of habitation for Abraham and his family. It apparently was named after an Amorite (Mamre) who helped Abraham defeat the evil king, Chedorlaomer (Genesis 14:1-24 ). Mamre was famous for its oak trees. It was just east of Mamre that Abraham purchased a cave (Machpelah) for a family burial plot. Its location was at Ramet et-Chalil, two miles north of Hebron. See Abraham; Machpelah .
