Holman Bible Dictionary

(mal ki' juh) Personal name with long and short spelling meaning, “My King is Yahweh.” 1. Ancestor of the musician Asaph (1 Chronicles 6:40 ). 2 . Priest in David's time (1 Chronicles 24:9; compare 1 Chronicles 9:12; Nehemiah 11:12 ). 3 . Prince of Judah in Jeremiah's time, probably the father of Pashur (Jeremiah 21:1; Jeremiah 38:1 ,Jeremiah 38:1,38:6 ); 4.-6 . Three of Ezra's contemporaries with foreign wives (Ezra 10:25 ,Ezra 10:25,10:31 ); some modern translations replace the second Malchijah in the Hebrew text of Ezra 10:25 with Hashabiah, the early Greek reading. 7. One standing with Ezra at the reading of the law ( Nehemiah 8:4 ). 8 . Priest signing Ezra's covenant (Nehemiah 10:3 ); 9.-12 . Four contemporaries of Nehemiah involved in the rebuilding (Nehemiah 3:11 ,Nehemiah 3:11,3:14 ,Nehemiah 3:14,3:31 ) or dedication of the walls (Nehemiah 12:42 ). Several of the references in Ezra and Nehemiah may refer to the same person(s).
