Maimed
Holman Bible Dictionary
Mutilated, disfigured, or seriously injured, especially by loss of a limb (Matthew 18:8; Mark 9:43 ). In the ancient world the maimed had difficulty finding work and relied on the generosity of others (Luke 14:13 ). A worthless shepherd (leader) does not care for the maimed (Zechariah 11:16 NRSV). Christ, the Good Shepherd, cared for the maimed in His healing ministry ( Matthew 15:30-31 ). He expected disciples to invite the maimed who could never repay (Luke 14:13 ). Cautioning His disciples to avoid what causes sin, Jesus taught it is preferable to enter (eternal) life maimed than to go into eternal fire with whatever causes one to sin (Matthew 18:8 ).
