Libya

Holman Bible Dictionary

(lihb' ee uh) A large land area between Egypt and Tunisia. Libya's northern border is the Mediterranean Sea. The people who inhabited the territory in biblical days are referred to variously as Chub (Ezekiel 30:5 ), Put (1 Chronicles 1:8; Nahum 3:9 ), Phut (Genesis 10:6; Ezekiel 27:10 ), and Libyans (Ezekiel 30:5; Ezekiel 38:5; Acts 2:10 ). Most of our knowledge of Libya comes from Egyptian records which mention border wars and invasions. Pharaoh Shishak I (about 950 B.C.) is thought to have been a Libyan. He began a dynasty in Egypt which reigned for over 200 years. He supported Jeroboam I in establishing the kingdom of Israel in 922 B.C. (1 Kings 11:40; 1 Kings 14:25-28; 2 Chronicles 12:1-12 ).
