Holman Bible Dictionary
(joh' ab) Personal name meaning, “Jah is brother.” 1. Scribe under King Hezekiah about 715-686 B.C. (2 Kings 18:18 ). He was one of the king's messengers to listen to the Assyrian Rab-shakeh and bring the message to the king. They did so in mourning (2 Kings 18:37 ). 2 . Son of royal scribe under King Josiah (640-609 B.C.). He helped repair the Temple (2 Chronicles 34:8 ). 3 . A Levite (1 Chronicles 6:21 ). 4 . Member of family of Levites, who were porters or gatekeepers (1 Chronicles 26:4 ). 5 . Levite who helped cleanse the Temple under King Hezekiah about 715 B.C. (2 Chronicles 29:12 ).
