Holman Bible Dictionary
(jay' van) Personal name meaning, “Greece.” Son of Japheth (Genesis 10:2 ), and father of Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim (Genesis 10:4 ), thus the original ancestor of Greek peoples. Elsewhere in the Old Testament, the name Javan is used to denote Greece. See Greece; Table of Nations .
