General
Holman Bible Dictionary
With reference to Sisera (Judges 4:7 ) and Joab (1 Chronicles 27:34 ), a general (NRSV) is the highest ranking officer in command of an army. General, commander, and (chief) captain are used interchangeably for such an officer in English translations. KJV consistently translates “captain” or “chief captain.”
