Bossed, Bosses
Holman Bible Dictionary
Bosses were knobs on the flat surfaces of shields. When shields were made of leather and wood, the bosses served to strengthen the shield. When shields were made of metal, the bosses were ornamental. Job 15:26 says that the wicked oppose God with thick-bossed shield—that is, a reinforced shield. Thus some modern translations express the meaning rather than using literal translation: “strong shield” (NIV); “massive shield” (NAS).
