Holman Bible Dictionary
(az' gad) Personal name meaning, “Gad is strong.” 1. Clan of which 1222 (Nehemiah 7:17 says 2,322) returned from Exile in Babylon with Zerubbabel to Jerusalem in 537 B.C. ( Ezra 2:12 ). One hundred eleven more returned with Ezra about 458 B.C. (Ezra 8:12 ). 2 . A Levite who signed the covenant Nehemiah made to keep God's law (Nehemiah 10:15 ).
