Assayer
Holman Bible Dictionary
One who tests ore for its silver and gold content. According to modern versions of Jeremiah 6:27 , the calling of Jeremiah was to be an assayer of the people. He did not find them to be a precious metal. The KJV takes the word from the Hebrew root for tower, which is spelled the same as the root word for assayer. Modern versions, however, seem to make the best sense of the Hebrew text (see the entire context; Jeremiah 6:27-30 ).See Bellows .
