Ashurite

Holman Bible Dictionary

(assh' uhr ite) or ASHURI (NIV) Apparently a tribe or clan over which Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, ruled (2 Samuel 2:9 ). The textual tradition among the earliest translations is not clear here with some evidence that the tribe of Asher or the city-state of Geshur is meant. In KJV of Ezekiel 27:6 Ashurites made “benches of ivory” for Tyre. Most modern translations use a different division of words in the Hebrew text and see a type of wood used: boxwood (NAS), cypress (NIV), pine (TEV, RSV), cedar (Jerusalem). If people from Ashur are meant in either of the original texts, we know nothing else about them.
