Arm

Holman Bible Dictionary

The upper limb of the human body used to symbolize power and strength. Such power can oppress people (Job 35:9 ), but such arms will be broken (Job 38:15 ). No human arm or power is comparable to God's (Job 40:9 ). In prayer the faithful can ask God to break the arm of the wicked (Psalm 10:15 ). Human arms cannot save (Psalm 44:3 ). God's outstretched arm does (Exodus 6:6; Exodus 15:16; Deuteronomy 5:15 ). People can trust in God's arm (Isaiah 51:5 ). On seeing Mary as she waited for the birth of Jesus, Elizabeth confessed that in bringing Jesus, God showed “strength with his arm” (Luke 1:51 ).
