Antipas
Holman Bible Dictionary
(an' tih pass) names a martyr in Revelation and the son of Herod the Great. 1. The tetrarch of Galilee at the time John the Baptist and Jesus began their public ministries (Luke 3:1 ). Antipas, whose name is an abbreviation of Antipater, ordered John the Baptist beheaded (Matthew 14:3 ). Pilate sent Jesus to Antipas prior to the crucifixion. On that occasion, he treated Jesus with scornful contempt (Luke 23:11 ). This won the friendship of Pilate. See Herod . 2. According to tradition, the martyr of the church of Pergamum in Revelation 2:13 was roasted in a brazen bowl at Domitian's request.
