Holman Bible Dictionary
(an' nuh) An aged prophetess who recognized the Messiah when He was brought to the Temple for dedication (Luke 2:36 ). Anna, whose name means “grace,” was the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. After seven years of marriage, she was widowed and became an attendant of the Temple. She was eighty-four when she recognized the Messiah, thanked God for Him, and proclaimed to all hope for the redemption of Jerusalem.
