Holman Bible Dictionary

(ay' mahn) Personal name meaning, “faithful.” 1. Governor of Samaria when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, who followed orders from the king of Israel and put the prophet Micaiah in prison (1 Kings 22:26 ). 2 . King of Judah (642 B.C.) following his father Manasseh. He followed the infamous idolatry of his father and was killed in a palace revolt (2 Kings 21:19-23 ). The people of Judah, in turn, killed the rebels. Good King Josiah, Amon's son, succeeded to his throne. See Matthew 1:10 . 3 . An ancestor of Temple staff members after the Exile (Nehemiah 7:59 ), called Ami in Ezra 2:57 . 4 . Egyptian god whose worship center at Thebes Jeremiah threatened with divine destruction (Jeremiah 46:25 ). KJV translates “the multitude of No.”
