Holman Bible Dictionary
(uh massh' awee) Personal name meaning, “burden bearer.” 1. A Levite in line of Kohath (1 Chronicles 6:25 ). 2 . A Levite in the line of Kohath and of Heman the singer (1 Chronicles 6:35 ), often identified with 1. 3. The chief of David's captains, who received prophetic inspiration from the Spirit (1 Chronicles 12:18 ). Note that he does not appear in 2 Samuel 23:1 . 4 . A priest and musician who blew trumpets before the ark of God in David's time (1 Chronicles 15:24 ). 5 . Levite, father of Mahath, who helped purify the Temple under Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:12 ).
