Charles Buck Theological Dictionary
1. A word originally used to denote a learned man, or man of letters; but now is the common appellation by which clergymen distinguish themselves in signing any deed or instrument.
2. Also the person who reads the responses of the congregation in the church, or gives out the hymns at a meeting.
