Justification

The American Church Dictionary and Cyclopedia

A theological word used to designate the forgiveness of the sinner and his restoration to a right relationship with God. The cause of Justification may be given as follows:

THE PRINCIPAL CAUSE. — God's mercy.
THE MERITORIOUS CAUSE. — Christ's death.
THE EFFICIENT CAUSE. — The operation of the Holy Ghost.
THE INSTRUMENTAL CAUSE ON GOD'S SIDE. — The Ministry of the Word, Baptism and the Holy Communion.
THE INSTRUMENTAL CAUSE ON MAN'S SIDE. — Faith which works by love.
