Leviticus 17:1-16
God reserves to Himself the right to the blood (see Leviticus 7:26-27). From this time forward the blood of the sacrifices, renewed each year, is found before His eye in the most holy place (ch. 16). And this blood, indispensable for the maintenance of the relationship between Himself and the people, speaks constantly to God’s heart of the work of His beloved Son.
Several passages of Scripture establish the virtues of the blood of Christ. It "makes atonement for the soul" (v. 11). It "cleanseth from all sin" (1 John 1:7). The smallest fault that we have committed must be purged by this blood and cannot otherwise be so. By it we have been redeemed . . . out of every nation (Revelation 5:9), redeemed . . . from our vain conversation (1 Peter 1:18-19), washed (Revelation 1:5), justified (Romans 5:9), reconciled (Colossians 1:20), sanctified (Hebrews 13:12), brought nigh (Ephesians 2:13); by it a way has been opened right into the holiest (Hebrews 10:19). By it also victory has been won for us (Revelation 12:11).
Precious blood of Jesus! Its virtue, its efficacy, is a stone of stumbling to those who do not lay hold of it by simple faith, but for the redeemed it is an eternal theme for praise and worship. "Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood . . . to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever! Amen." (Revelation 1:5-6).
