Genesis 25:1-18

The end of Abraham’s life completes a comprehensive prophetic picture:

Genesis 21:1-34 : the birth of the Son

Genesis 22:1-24 : the cross and the resurrection of the true Isaac

Genesis 23:1-20 : the putting aside of Israel (the death of Sarah)

Genesis 24:1-67 : the call of the Church and her union with Christ in glory

Finally chapter 25: the introduction of the thousand year reign when the nations of the earth, represented by the children of Keturah, will be blessed in their relationship with Isaac.

To him Abraham makes a gift of everything that he has. Isaac represents Christ in His character of universal Heir. "The LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; . . . Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance" (Psalms 2:7-8). It is to this glorious future that Abraham’s thoughts turn by faith. Beyond Isaac he is thinking of the One through whom the promises would be fulfilled. "Abraham rejoiced to see my day," Jesus said to the Jews, "and he saw it and was glad" (John 8:56). He dies in faith "not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off . . . and embraced them" (Hebrews 11:13). So Abraham is one of the men of whom God is not ashamed, even to the point of linking his name with His own in calling Himself the "God of Abraham". Can He also call Himself your God?
